Most underrated cities/towns in Maryland?

What cities and towns in Maryland do you think are underrated, and why? This is my list. By no means is this an all-inclusive list. I am sure there are many more towns and cities in Maryland that are underrated, it's just that I am only familiar with so many areas in Maryland that I may not have gotten everything. Besides, part of the reason I started this thread is because I wanted to hear about any towns I didn't mention in order to find more places to venture to :).
FREDERICK: Even though it is stereotyped to be hicky, redneck, and in the middle of nowhere, I don't find this to be the case. Downtown Frederick is a nice, diverse, and vibrant area. It is where the suburbs of DC and the Appalachia mountain region of Western Maryland meet, and the influences from both sides give Frederick a very interesting and unique vibe. There are lots of great restaurants, entertainment, and art scenes as well.
CROFTON/ODENTON/GAMBRILLS: This area is underrated. It is often seen as just an extension of Annapolis, and while they are suburban towns near Annapolis, there is a lot of new shopping and entertainment in this area. The public schools in the area are some of the best in the state, and with the opening of a brand new high school in Crofton soon, there are a lot of reasons for people to consider living there. In addition to being very close to Annapolis, this area also has very easy access to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore
ARNOLD/SEVERNA PARK: Beautiful suburbs of Annapolis with a lot of historic water and Chesapeake Bay sailing culture. Some of the best public schools in Maryland (Severna Park HS and Broadneck HS)
DAVIDSONVILLE: You wouldn't feel like you're only 25-30 minutes away from Washington, D.C. and only 10 minutes away from Annapolis when you're here. You see lots of mansions on plotted on large swaths of land and it feels rural and quiet. This area is very unique because it is rural, yet it defies all stereotypes of rural-ness. Majority of the residents hold white-collar jobs, the median income of Davidsonville is among the highest in all of Maryland, and the residents are very educated. It is a great place to live if you want to live near urban areas in a top notch school district yet want quiet and privacy. It is a remnant of AACos past heritage.
IJAMESVILE: This is a suburb of DC in Frederick County, near the MoCo border that many have never heard of. It has top-notch schools and good access to DC and Frederick. Similar to Davidsonville, it defies stereotypes of rural-ness because it is majority white collar and extremely wealthy.
HANOVER: A unique town that is split between two counties: Anne Arundel and Howard. It is just 10-15 minutes away from Baltimore City. Residents tend to be upper middle-class and wealthy, though there is good socio-economic diversity. It is also 25 minutes away from Annapolis, 5 minutes away from Ft. Meade, right near BWI, and about 40 minutes away from DC. Hanover is home to the Arundel Mills Mall which has many great stores, restaurants, and a casino. If you live on the Howard County side, you also get top-notch public school districts, but if you live on the Anne Arundel side, you are stuck with awful public schools.
TAKOMA PARK: A one-of-a-kind suburb just outside of Washington, D.C. It is extremely progressive and it is extremely common to see gay couples holding hands and churches and houses with pride flags/immigrant supporting signs. The schools in the area are good and there are many unique resturaunts in the area. It is also very socioeconomically and racially diverse and is one of the more affordable (good) suburbs of DC to live in.
CUMBERLAND: This city is very cool because it was once the most populous and industrialized city in all of Maryland, and as such, it has an abandoned large city vibe. It is very pretty and has a Western European/German vibe to it as well.
BOWIE: This town is ideally located 20 minutes away from Annapolis and Washington, D.C. There is a lot of good shopping and entertainment, and you're also very close to shopping/entertainment in Crofton. Six Flags is also here.
COLLEGE PARK: There is more to College Park than just the University of Maryland's flagship campus. There are lots of great resturaunts, entertainment, shopping, and dining as well. Being near a large top-ranked public research university is also a huge plus though. You are also just outside of Washington, D.C. However, it is only recommended to visit College Park, not live in it (unless you are a student at the University of Maryland, College Park and live on/near campus). There is some concerns with crime in College Park.
NORTH BEACH: A really good alternative to Ocean City if you live in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. metro area.
TOWSON: It is one of the best, if the not the best suburb of Baltimore. Great downtown, unique dining, and an amazing mall. Also has very amazing public schools.
LAUREL: A good, ethnically diverse suburb of D.C. and Baltimore with good shopping and dining.
PIKESVILLE: A cool area near Baltimore with strong Jewish culture and many kosher resturaunts/markets. You'll find some of the best Jewish food in the entire country there.
BEL AIR: A good mix of rural Northeastern Maryland and suburban Baltimore. Good schools, dining, and entertainment.
ELKRIDGE/SAVAGE: Although this area is often just considered to be an extension of Columbia and Ellicott City, Elkridge has some of the best shopping, dining, and entertainment in all of HoCo. Savage also has the historic Savage mill. Great public schools.

Red Roof Inn offering free lodging for HCW/ first responders

https://www.redroof.com/deals/national-deals/room-in-your-heart
I thought this information could help those who want to use protective distancing from their loved ones.
stay safe! ❤️
Room in Your Heart: Opening Doors to First Responders
Red Roof®, the leader in upscale economy lodging, is giving back to our country’s first responders—dedicated nurses, doctors, firefighters, police and emergency medical providers—who are fighting tirelessly to combat COVID-19. Many of these essential workers on the frontlines need a place to self-quarantine away from their homes and families to protect their loved ones.
From April 3 – May 31, Red Roof is donating a limited number of available rooms to these brave heroes, giving them a place to sleep and stay in between shifts at participating locations across the country.
Many Red Roof locations are exterior corridor hotels where separate hotel room doors open to the outside of the building instead of an interior hallway. After check-in, guests can drive to their room instead of walking through the building, reducing contact with interior touchpoints. Rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, a workstation and a communication package that includes free local and long-distance calls as well as free in-room coffee (in most rooms). One well-behaved domestic pet—cat or dog—is always welcome to stay at no charge.
Call a participating hotel directly to book your stay.
*Each guest must provide valid medical, firefighter, or police identification. Offer does not apply to guests staying under a current government contract and all rooms are subject to availability. Pet accommodations policy may vary at some Home Towne Studios by Red Roof locations.

41 M [friendship] [activities] Los Angeles - Is anyone else's Matrix busted? All I can get is Idiot Relay Race over here and it's stuck on loop

Not A Conspiracy Nut - still believes in Aliens, Bigfoot, Loch Ness, and ghosts
I'm not here to judge or to cast aspersions on anyone's life choices but I just gotta know: Are the people setting fire to the 5G towers a new group of B-Holes or are they a know commodity? I guess my real question is: Do new groups of weird conspiracy theory people, e.g. B-Holes, just pop up like mushrooms on the forest floor, separate and unique, or are these more like High Level RPG characters that have amassed a collection of hair-brained ideas to propel them through the coming apocalypse? So to point- Does our 5G tower B-Hole also believe that the world is flat and that women are holding back sex through some brilliant web of "Making Sure No One (but Chad) Gets that Sweet Goodie Good" Method of World Domination?
Is s/he the Uber-mensch of "All You Sheeple believe everything the govt and the WHO and the CDC and Scientists and Common Sense tells you"? Like a Level 99 Cloud Strife ready to unleash a flurry of Limit Breaks the moment you, an unaware passerby, bring up the fact that their rhetoric sounds like lazy Star Trek writing (Have you seen Discovery?) and that no one trying to take over the world would use vaccines (which all you B-Holes are convinced are poison anyway) to distribute Satanic nano-machines to control everyone's minds. They'd just put those nano-machines in the hand sanitizer that you can't seem to get enough of. (Same group of B-Holes hording toilet paper as these guys??)
So what about me? Who am I?
I'm a casino worker waiting for this Covid mess to end so that I can go back to doing what I do best: Watching animated drunks blow their entire life savings while telling me that everyone of their crappy decisions are somehow MY FAULT and that they hold no blame in the state of their lives. I'm paraphrasing, of course. I also miss all of the pimps, the 4:00 am hookers, and the many C/D level celebrities that would sit next to our sad gambling victim. (Bonus about me- I've got plenty of casino stories)
More?
I'm a music whore. Can't stop. Won't stop. I smoke weed a bunch, and if the world weren't ending I'd be all about some Dodger baseball right now. Charger season comes in the fall, usually, which might make me sound like a former jock or normie, but I assure you I am quite weird and awkward hahaha. I came by sports the nerdy way, so don't be intimidated if you don't know the rules. I'd love to help you if you'd like to learn, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE introducing new fans to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Speaking of which, once this pandemic ends I'm looking to get out there and see all that L.A. has to offer. Bonus points if you know a great chicken sandwich and would like to come along to grab it.

Maryland Live! Trip Report

Stopped in last night (Wednesday) about 10:30 p.m.
I think they have 7 tables. 4 were open. One was $25. I found a spot SR2 at a $15 table. I think the other 2 tables were $15 as well. I think I was the 8th player, 4 on each side.
Bought in for $200 and table was choppy. I got down to about $120 playing mostly $18 6/8 with come betting until I had 4 or 5 numbers up.
Eventually I started to mix in DNPs when the table was not doing well and the dice were at the end of the table. I layed $6 a few times and made all of those. A few yo's hurt, though.
My first time shooting was point, place 6/8, come bet, ace-deuce, another come bet, another number, seven out. Lost $81. Second time not much better. One shooter made me a little and a couple more DNP bets worked.
Guy arrives and buys in for $3,000 with a marker. Hits a couple of box numbers. Dice come to me.
Set the point at 5. Place 6/8, come bet. Start hitting a mix of 5/6/8s while a few more numbers go up and I'm on 5 numbers and continually come betting. I start putting odds down as I keep hitting numbers. And eventually Im collecting on those and got to the point that i had odds of $10 on 4/5/9, $5 on 10, and $15 each on 6/8. Hit a few more numbers then rolled an ace deuce and lost the come bet. I turned off all my odds and sevened out on the next roll.
I wss up to about $325. Played a couple more shooters and colored up for $283.
Casino is no smoking. Tables have no hop bets and no A/T/S or stuff like that. Very, very basic layout. Very convenient to both I-95 and BWI Parkway, and actually much closer to Baltimore than to DC.

Ultimate Guide to Baltimore for Visiting Fans

Not exhaustive, feel free to add suggestions.
Where to Stay
I’ll leave the research about specific hotels up to you, but here are some general options to consider.
...in the city:
Inner HarboDowntown
Harbor East
Other hotels near the stadium
Away from the stadium
AirBnB
...outside of the city
Near the airport
Hunt Valley
Towson
Getting to/from the Stadium
By foot (if staying nearby) - self explanatory
By car - If you plan on parking on a stadium lot or on the street nearby the stadium:
Public transportation - light rail with several park-and-ride stops north and south of the city. Terminal stops at Hunt Valley and BWI
UbeLyft - you won’t be able to get too close to the stadium due to blocked off streets/traffic/and tailgating on the streets around the stadium. Plan to be picked up and dropped off towards the outskirts of the stadium area
Parking
Stadium Lot - convenient if you don’t mind paying. Will deal with the most traffic using this option
Private lot - a large number of lots charging $15-30 for parking. Many feature official or unofficial large tailgates
Street - if you arrive early enough there is free street parking on the west side of the stadium. This is in the area of Wicomico Ave. You can set up your tailgate right where you park
Tailgating
Tailgating at Ravens games is not limited to stadium lots. Many will park their cars on surrounding streets and set up their tailgate right there. Additionally, there are several private lots that host their own tailgate parties with food and drink for purchase. There are also all-inclusive tailgates. Cops are around directing traffic but they turn a blind eye to public drinking laws. In my opinion, the tailgate scene outside of the stadium is where you really want to be.
If you are looking to join an open tailgate, I'd look for a larger group. Your best bet is to pay for an all-inclusive tailgate (it sounds like Jimmy's Seafood and a few others host these) or to simply wonder into an open one (some are open without paying to enter or for parking). Offering food or drink to members of the tailgate will usually get you in on good terms and provide a way to connect.
The Firehouse is near the stadium and a great option if you don’t want to deal with paying to get on a private lot or setting up a whole tailgate on the street for 2 or 3 people. It has a bar inside and bathrooms (nice) and food and drink also for sale outside.
There is also the Game-day Warehouse, but I don’t know much about that.
Attractions (in no particular order)
Food & Drink (just a selection)
Breweries & Distilleries
Baltimore has a strong craft beer scene. Some favorites:
Neighborhoods
Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods. Here are a few worth visiting depending on tastes.
Safety
Baltimore has a reputation as a rough and dangerous city, and its not unfounded. The vibe of an area will literally change when crossing on street into a different neighborhood. Know where you are going. Most crime occurs at these crossover points.
At the tailgates, kids will try to sell you cookies they bought from the dollar store. Some will say they are raising money for a cause. Some might be lying some might be telling the truth. Also people trying to sell bootleg Ravens gear. Totally harmless but something to be aware of.
Use street smarts, watch out for the squeegee kids, be aware of your surroundings. The typical stuff. If you keep to the suggestions in this thread you should not run into any problems.

41 [M4R] Los Angeles - Is anyone else's Matrix busted?

Respect Kasumi Goto (Mass Effect)

“I'm the best thief in the business, not the most famous. Need to watch my step to keep it that way.”

Kasumi Goto

OST
Kasumi Goto is the galaxy's most enigmatic thief and has enemies everywhere, but only a few could put a name to her face. While she used to work together with her partnelover Keiji Okuda, after stealing sensitive information from the criminal Donovan Hock he was killed, and his greybox (a special storage device tied to his brain/memories) was removed. Around this time Kasumi was contacted by the human-centric organization Cerberus, who wanted her help in Commander Shepard's mission to stop the Collectors. She agreed, but on the condition that Shepard would aid her in stealing the greybox back from Hock.
Note: A number of feats can be performed by any squadmate regardless of who they are. These feats will be marked with [Squadmate] and the gif is not guaranteed to have Kasumi in them. Similarly, gifs of Kasumi's in game abilities are performed by Shepard (since the abilities are functionally identical in game regardless of who's using them)

Information on In-Universe Tech
Firearms: Mass Effect firearms work by using mass effect fields and electromagnetism to accelerate metal slugs to sufficient velocities and are designed to squash or shatter on impact. A single weapon can hold thousands of rounds, smaller than grains of sand. In general Mass Effect weaponry tear up stone and concrete, and destroy a satelite uplink in a single shot
Body Armor: Body armor is made of fabric hardsuits with kinetic padding, with less flexible areas potentially reinforced with ceramic. These suits can be be sealed to protect against hostile enviornments. They can also apply medi-gel if an injury is detected Resistance to gun fire depends on the amount of reinforcement over a given body part.
Kinetic Barriers: Kinetic barries create mass effect fields that repel projectiles moving at sufficiently high velocity. Barriers can easily block single shots from pistols and submachine guns, and in the novels can block at least limited shots from assault rifles and sniper rifles

Weapons
Kasumi specializes in heavy pistols and submachine guns. In game she will wield one of each.
Heavy Pistols
Submachine Guns
Weapon Modification
  • In Mass Effect 2 these upgrades are specific to weapon types, and all are applied as soon as they are researched. They increase the damage and utility of the various weapons
  • In Mass Effect 3 upgrades are items that can be applied to each induvidual weapon. They vary between weapon types, but tend to increase accuracy, damage, penetration, melee damage, etc...

Due to the nature of the Mass Effect series there are multiple ways Kasumi can die in a given players playthrough. A number of these can potentially come across as anti-feats

May-29, 2019: CLICKGEM'S NEWS:

Hello all members, sorry for the late update with all other inconvenience happened to you. Our marketing team has to accompany our CEO to go to China for a lot of meetings with public exchanges and game developers there. And as you know, the internet connection in China is very strict and we can't access our Gmail, Telegram, Twitter, or Facebook, etc... especially at this time. We have just come back yesterday and continue to update much good news for ClickGem project:
  1. We have worked with many public exchanges for ClickGem IEO, most of them don't want to support our IEO because too many people owning free CGM & CGMT (over 35% total supply) from mining CGM easily... This problem will make our price dumped immediately and over control after IEO, and it will affect the reputation of the exchange. To solve this problem, we met and agreed with the exchanges a solution is that release a new token called CGMT v2 (ClickGem Token version 2) with "transfer & lock" function for reallocating token holders, IEO and listing. Our IEO price for the first session will be 0.001 USD per 1 CGMT v2. Most of ClickGem users have to swap their CGM/CGMT to CGMT v2 with swap rate is 16 CGMT v2 (0.016 USD) per 1 CGM or 0.0016 CGMT v2 (0.0000016 USD) per 1 CGMT, and their new token will be locked for 6 months after swapped. Only our first ICO investors are accepted to swap with the beneficial swap rate is 4000 CGMT v2 (4 USD) per CGM or 2.5 CGMT v2 (0.0025 USD) per CGMT for the amount of CGM they bought from our first ICO, their new token will be also locked for 6 months after swapped. Team & Advisors 's new tokens are only allocated at 15% total supply and they will be also locked for 12 months. Please use the swap module in our web wallet for swapping CGM/CGMT to CGMT v2. Please note, we will stop supporting CGM/CGMT after IEO and listed on the public exchange, only CGMT v2 will be listed and supported in our ecosystem. CGMT: 0xf024628c7bf1ffec7ca184026cd0764ac11ba22f CGMT v2: 0x84f43821c73da781a7c440c3ca1a50e1013f7219
  2. We received complaints from some people about losing balance in their CGMT, ETH or ERC-20 wallet. For sure, nothing is lost, our wallet system (CGWALLET) is just hiding your old ETH keystore and replaced it with a new ETH keystore after upgraded. This upgrade for simplifying the process of deposit/withdraw tokens to/from CGEXCHANGE, CGCASINO, CGLOTTO, CGGAMES, etc... and solving the trouble with the wallet password which happened with some users. We will send back your old ETH keystore so you can get back CGMT, ETH, and other ERC-20 tokens by importing it to Metamask or MEW. Please use this Google Form to claim back your old ETH keystore: https://forms.gle/yHfv5WYco3wA6cAY9 . We can't support every people through email because we received a lot of spam emails every day, please understand for us!
  3. Our MMO/MMORPG Game Portal - CGGAMES.APP and its first game Gunbound will be launched in next week. All games in this game portal will use CGMT v2 for buying in-game items. We will release an amount of unlocked CGMT v2 from the token budget which allocated for the ClickGem ecosystem. Of course, all coins/tokens supported in CGWALLET can be swapped to CGMT v2 through CGEXCHANGE.
  4. We have just bought a great casino games platform with a lot of casino games for CGCASINO; We are currently re-developing it for integrating with our wallet system (CGWALLET). Like CGGAMES, this new platform will use CGMT v2 as a central currency and all other coins/tokens which supported in CGWALLET have to swap to CGMT v2 through CGEXCHANGE for playing. Of course, we are still developing our old casino games platform as a multi-currency platform to support our partners. People can track the development and demo of our new casino games platform here: http://52.74.229.78/ (Demo user: testgameok - Demo password: 123456Aa@)
  5. About our IEO: Although stopped working with Liquid, we are getting good offers from Bit-Z (through their agency, Beecast), Lbank, P2PB2B, Exrates, and other exchanges. We are building a big plan for our IEO & listing. After integrated new casino games platform, we will set up meetings with casino investors to raise 2.5M USD for our seed funding round then IEO & Listing. Please check the detailed plan here: https://www.clickgem.com/uploads/news/SeedFunding.pdf ; Of course, if you want to join our private sale sessions as an early investor, please send email to [email protected]!

Twin Cities, do you realize how awesome your music is?

You probably do, since y'all practically have a radio station devoted to it. But wow Minneapolis/St Paul, you guys produce some amazing music! Sometimes I feel like half of my music collection hails from there, and I'm forever finding new-to-me artists from your city (or nearby) and honestly, I'm jealous. My hometown has some good bands, but we don't have piles that I absolutely love to bits and pieces like Minneapolis does.
Who am I missing? If I wanted to see these guys -- or local acts in general -- what venues should I go to?
And please, keep up the good work!

banging head against the wall—trying to book award seats on American

I am semi new to booking award travel so maybe I'm doing something wrong but I was searching for flights from DC area to either San Juan or Aruba. One flight came up BWI to PHL to AUA. I can drive to PHL in about 2 hours so I searched for PHL to AUA and instead of giving me that flight, now it wants go PHL>CLT>AUA or through Miami. or sometimes both with 2 connections!! WHY???????
This was just a spontaneous weekend trip because my friend has two free casino nights at either Ritz Carlton (or Marriott) San Juan or Aruba but the all flight options are terrible so I give up. It probably wasn't the best use of the miles anyway.

IamA Passenger of Grandeur of the Seas - Full Description of the Fire that Occurred (Long)

There has been another passenger IamA about this, please give him a shout, everyones experience was completely different. Check it out here!
The Grandeur of the Seas, A Firsthand Perspective
Hi Reddit, I’m Mark Ormesher, and I was the first passenger to contact the Associated Press when the Internet came back up on the Grandeur. That started because of a post I made on the Royal Caribbean International (hereafter referred to as RCI) Facebook page. I wanted to let not only my family, but other families that in fact, without PR spin, everything was fine.
So here we are, I’m expanding some sections, continuing the story all the way to the end.
The Cruise Begins, 05/24/13
When you first get on the cruise, before it even leaves port, the captain leads a muster drill. This drill is required by maritime law to instruct visitors to what to do when the alarm triggered.
The instructions are posted on each stateroom door
The muster station number is on your SeaPass Card - This is also my proof!
Our Muster Station was on the Port Aft side of the ship, Deck 5. When the captain starts the drill, you are to move to your station and have your SeaPass card scanned. The scanners that they use keep track of who has checked in, live updating provides the ships crew up to date information. When everyone had checked in, Captain Espen Been got on the intercom and released us with a casual: “You can now do… pretty much whatever you want!”
The In-Between, 05/24 – 05/26
We had one day of sailing, Casino time, drinking, sun!
My GF and I at the formal dinner
And a beautiful sunrise!
Cruise life is a lot of fun, the night of the 26th the cruise director, John, and his staff threw a 70’s party in the Centrum (the center of the ship, an open space in the center of the ship, 5 decks tall) this party was called the Disco Inferno, no joke. My girlfriend and I stayed out until about midnight, ending up in the casino, getting more drinks, and then solidly passing out in our stateroom.
The cruise director staff
The Fire, 05/27/13
This section is word for word what I sent to the Associated Press, most of this was left out, but Kasey Jones got a good jist of the event, thank you Kasey!
We were roused at around 3am by an announcement from the Captain that we should proceed to our muster stations. Immediately following, my girlfriend and I had our cabin door knocked on by our room attendant, my main man Jeremy James. He told us to grab our floatation devices and that this was not a drill.
We were assigned to muster station 10, being on the 2nd deck and aft, our stateroom was close to the event. Upon proceeding to the muster station we were redirected by the crew towards a secondary muster position in the casino. The crew provided clear instruction, and we were made aware of how we were to proceed, even though it was 3 in the morning.
Upon arrival to the casino, we had our cards scanned and checked in. There were a total of six in our party and we found each other as soon as all had arrived. The crew was swift in providing instruction, no panic, no messing around. This encouraged calm amongst the passengers.
Over the course of the next four hours we were kept updated by the captain over the intercom at regular intervals. He provided us as much information as we needed to stay safe. We were not allowed to leave our muster station.
In this time, the crew members provided moral and logistical support. The organization, the double-checking, and the comforting words fell upon a audience that was both tired and eager for as much information as possible.
I saw many acts of kindness and courtesy from the crew in that time. A woman had forgotten her glasses in the evacuation; a crew member retrieved those glasses for her. Medication for an elderly patron was retrieved. Crying infants were given formula and held while the parents went to the bathroom.
About 30 minuets into the muster, the crew went behind the bar in the casino, and using every piece of glassware they could acquire, they passed out glasses of water, because the air conditioner had been shut off, it was getting hot. An hour later the captain ordered the distribution of provisions. Bottles of Evian were passed out amongst the musters. We saw cups of Diet Coke passed around as well.
Crew members checked in on us with frequency, and as we all continued through the waiting game, they talked with us and kept our spirits up. Never have I felt such trust in a staff before. They had been up from early the morning before, providing us with entertainment, and did their jobs when an emergency arose.
Since the event I have seen the rear of the ship from Freeport. The damage is much beyond what I could have imagined. I am impressed that the crew was able to handle such an event, with the help of the US Coast Guard.
I want to reinforce, as I did on my facebook posting, that I have never been so impressed with a staff, especially when dealing with an emergency situation. Before this arose I was pleased with the personable approach of the crew, and their dedication to making my experience an excellent one.
I know from conversations that the fire impacted the staff facilities more than it did the patron facilities. My thoughts are with the captain and crew, for whom this ship is both their work and home, and hope that they are able to see her back to good order.
This is my first cruise experience, and though I may not make it to my destinations, I will return as a customer to this company, knowing that they will go far and above the excellence I expect from my vacation.
A disclaimer: I do not work for, nor have I ever worked for, Royal Caribbean International. Nothing that I write here can be held as legally binding, nor as anything but my personal observations of an event.
/End AP Email/
This is our party in the Casino:
Observations: We did not have to stand outside for four hours, I know that for some this was not pleasant. Did people faint from fear? I don’t believe it was fear, after seeing people stand in Choirs and Shows for an hour and a half I know that locking your knees leads to fainting. That being said I did not witness the lifeboats being put in position, I have no idea how I would have felt, but it was something that they had to do. Better safe than sorry.
When we evacuated our room, we took a few minutes to get ready, probably only 2. In that time I grabbed our passports and cash, put on pants and my jacket, and used the bathroom. When my GF I don’t know if that was the best course of action with how close we were to the fire, but it is what happened. Had we have left the ship I would have been glad to be carrying my passport and Green Card (UK citizen in the US) and the phone allowed me to contact my mother as soon as we were in range of the cell network at Freeport. There was a dude in his boxer shorts. That was not me. Success.
The bathrooms were apparently hell. They used all of the water pressure in the ship fighting the fire.
The Cruise Staff member, Aubrey, who spent time with us during the muster is one of the coolest people I’ve met. She has said that in her 2.5 years with RCI she had never experienced anything like this. Additionally she had just finished a 14 hour day on the 26th, and had just gone to bed when the fire broke out. After the fire she was dealing with logistics and passenger support, I’ve never seen someone so tough. Both her and Lynn were champions, we checked in on them throughout the next two days. If you’re reading this guys, we love you, thank you.
The muster leaders were also the performers for the ships shows. These guys were awesome.
The Aftermath

Soot from the fire on Deck 10
We made it to Freeport under our own engines; the passengers were released from muster. The ones whose cabins weren’t that close to the fire were able to go back first. We sat around for an additional 2 hours, waiting for them to check all rooms and clear the smoke. We had no clue how bad the fire had been. Everyone was able to call their family, I posted to Facebook and to the RCI page. RCI opened up the wifi for free. The process of dealing with the fire had begun.
Both our Cruise Director and the Captain spoke to us on the intercom. They informed us that some staterooms had been damaged and that some people would not be able to stay on the ship. Knowing where we were in the ship, we were concerned that our staterooms were impacted. I had my laptop and iPad in there, but in the long run, that wouldn’t have been too much of an issue.
The firehose two rooms down from us had been deployed, this was one door down from my GF's sister and her GF's room
When we were allowed off of the ship, we headed down to the gangway at deck 1. We ran into Lynn and Aubrey and they told us that they hadn’t seen the impact of the fire, nor had a chance for rest. We all went around the back of the boat to look at the damage, holy hell. We took pictures of the rear of the boat, you’ve seen some of them plastered around the internet, grabbed a couple of Red Bulls, and went back on the ship. We passed the Red Bulls off to our staff friends and showed them the pictures. Their long day had just begun…
Back 1 Back 2
As the ship did not have ABC license for Freeport, so we were not able to drink on the ship. Luckily the bars in town were more than willing to provide that service! Shame that the Bros and Bro-esses surrounded us from the Carnival ships. That being said, Senor Frogs made me smile with the water pattern on the drink mat: Smile Bro
That afternoon we found out that we had reached the end of our cruise. The ship was too heavily damaged to maintain normal operations. When the captain was making this announcement you could tell that it upset him, it upset everyone, but we knew that was how it had to be. That ship needed all of the love and care so that other people could continue to enjoy her later on.
The staff never stopped, they continued to put on entertainment and delicious meals. Our friend Aubrey ran the trivia and we laughed so hard that it felt good.
The show for the evening, Seasons, was an aerial show in the Centrum, the fantastic cast of dancers and singers performed a beautiful show. At the end of the show during the curtain call, John came out and talked to us. As close to his words as possible:
“I don’t know if you recognize these fantastic performers, but they were your muster captains last night, and for that we thank them.”
The entire boat was on its feet. We cheered and whooped. The outpouring of emotion was intense. They were our heroes. It’s still giving me goose bumps as I write this.
This same scene happened again when the Captain talked to us and introduced us to the fire suppression team. They saved our asses.
Returning Home
I wish that this had gone a little smoother. Yesterday morning we were told to proceed to the theater deck by deck to fill out Bahamian immigration. This was not the plan, the plan was to do immigration before we left for our flights. I found out that the Bahamian Immigration Officers were not happy with staying the whole day on the ship and threatened to leave unless they saw everyone immediately.
Aside, Saw someone else in Dry Dock as we were leaving, the Triumph! It was raining most of that day and that caused delays in flights. We were scheduled to leave at 5pm and we didn’t even leave the ship until 6pm. The staff at the airport was not fully prepared to handle 2,200 people trying to get home and we had delays at that end.
Rows of charter planes waiting for passengers
We left at 11pm from Freeport Airport. We got back to BWI at about 1am. The landing was probably the roughest I’ve been on and ended up with a bit of damage to the aircraft.
This popped off the ceiling as we landed
The welcome party from RCI was huge, people guided us and answered questions, thanking us for our patience. They guided some to hotels so that they could get flights home, and those of us who drove got bussed back to the terminal.
Massive numbers of busses
When we got back to the terminal, the crew there helped unload baggage and waited with everyone until their rides got there. On the way out of the parking lot I was informed that we would also be receiving full refunds for parking.
I got home at about 5am and proceeded to sleep.
The Future
We’ve already decided we are going to use our free cruise to go out on the Grandeur again. She took care of us once, we trust her to do it again. We’re going to make shirts that read:
C’mon Grandeur! Get us to the Bahamas like there’s a fire under your aft!
Thank you RCI staff, both onboard, executive and from around the company that came to help us. You guys made the bad situation so much more manageable.
Edit I can bold! Edit 2 I can link! Edit 3 Fixed some broken links, added photos from my GFs sister.
This is my first long text post, thanks for understanding. My grammar may not be the best, if there is something confusing please dont hesitate to mention it, as you can imagine it has been a long 72 hours.
Tl; Dr: A disaster that could have been much worse, was made better by the great crew and company. Don’t be afraid to cruise with Royal Caribbean, these guys know what they’re doing.

Are there any other mermaids on here?

I swim because I want to get fit and I swim because I'm trying to be a mermaid. You know, one of those people who swim in a tail made of latex or silicone or swim fabric or Lycra. I've got a strong community of fellow Merfolk over at Mer.yuku.com, but I wonder if there are any redditors who share my interest? Are there any redditor Merfolk around me who want to go for a swim together? Any that read this in excitement not knowing if could be done before? Ah, let me know.
Edit#1: I've been asked to post links of what I'm talking about so here goes.
Hannah Mermaid is from Australia and (I think) the best mermaid out there. She's a professional, she travels the world, and does all sort of charity and ocean activism. I believe she's the first mermaid to be as successful as she is.
Linden Wolbert is from LA, California and has been featured on 20/20 with Hannah Mermaid. Her tail is silicone, she can hold her breath for five minutes, and is an advocate for ocean conservation and water safety.
Mermaid Kariel is a new mermaid out of Hawaii. She made her tail out of recycled wetsuits and hosts a Fins for Fitness class at JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa. She has also written a mermaid book for children.
MerBellas are two performing mermaids based out of Tampa Bay, Florida who have made their own tails and are wonderful in helping other mermaids with theirs. Mermaid Raven even makes mermaid accessories for everyone <3.
Mermaid Sasha is a wonderful mermaid who posted a video, How to make a Mermaid tail, three years ago. I really believe this started the trend of young men and women going out to get monofins and fabric and make their own dream a reality. Then people started making their own monfins and working with slip cast latex and silicone molds and we have a bunch of professional mermaids today. The best part is all the little girls making their own tails and videos. They're so cute!!
Mer.Yuku.com is a mermaid and merman costuming forum where people come together to discuss talkmaking, review tail sellers, make friends, and talk about their common obsession :D Here is a link to a popular topic right now, Making your own Latex Tail.
Mike Van Daal is a tailmaker known to be considerate and professional, while the Mertailor is quite the opposite. There's also Aquatails, Mermagica, and a lot more. Right now on mer.yuku.com people are experimenting on making better, cheaper, and more realistic tails.
Some mermaids even get to perform in Aquariums. Or Casino Aquariums. Or virtual aquariums! And then there's the famous Weeki Wachi Mermaids. Here's a video of the Weeki Wachee girls doing a Christmas show at the Georgia Aquarium
So! There's some informative links!
