• in a word, elegant. in another two: oddly (you sense a theme here) relaxed. like you imagine miami in the '80s, during sunset over the ocean... minus the grime and old people driving on the median. you hear some obvious digitally created lo-fi sounds. 8-bit? looking in the distance, you see a sign with an arrow pointing down and to the left: ”arcade”. mystery solved! your stomach involuntarily receives a flutter of excitement and anticipation; underneath the larger letters reads ”5 tokens $1, 11 tokens $2, 42 tokens $5”. a long, straight haired androgynous couple, one dyed black and the other bleached white lets out a simultaneous laugh in the distance; you hear ”ski-ball!” as the pair run underneath the sign and disappear. this might actually be fun!

• you checked in with only one minor incident: your reserved room wasn't ready yet. before you could say that you didn't mind waiting (an excuse for the arcade... not that you needed one) the concierge asks if you will accept a complimentarily room upgrade to one with a deluxe balcony, japanese bath, and view of the night sky over the ocean (really the gulf) facing west. you thank your lucky stars that that light pollution law passed a few years ago. everyone thought it was too odd and unimportant to pass at the time, and nobody thought it would pass, but it did... without riders, without debate, unanimous. first the house, then the senate an hour later, and the president shocked everyone by signing it at the stroke of midnight on the winter solstice. now you can see your lucky stars... from within a city, of all things. energy use went down because of it, and so did pollution. unexpectedly, cities became quieter at night, and there were less therapy visits for generalized anxiety disorder. book and app sales about astronomy and astrology were trending, and in general, people seem more chill, more relaxed, more focused. it was not uncommon to see your neighbor on a lawn chair on their roof watching the sun set after work.
  
• this night sky was gorgeous! how did so many generations give it up? and for what? crappy 7/11 and motel-6 neon lowglow? lame. the evening sky over the gulf is even more spectacular than you remember, and you pause in your unpacking and settling into your room to watch for a few minutes more.
  
• the keynote speach is listed as a costume formal: tux, gown, dress uniform, and/or come-as-you-are, shoes optional event: another oddly satisfying and kind of exciting contradiction. so the choice is yours: do you pick the expertly tailored black and white tux you had taken in a bit last week? or a below-the-knee black and white gown your partner insisted you pack... just in case. it would be an an oddity for you to wear a gown to anything, you laugh. oddity. this place must be infectious! what the heck, gown it is! luckily its easy to put on and more far more androgynous than expected. it's very nearly like wearing a lightweigh black and grey kilt, like at the highland games. you look over your balcony and see a contingent in formal black-and-white star-trek looking body suit type unforms pause and bow to a group in what appears to be tuxedo labcoats with tails. looking in the mirror, you don't look half bad!

• you have a few good drinks in you, or was that a good few? the air is pleasantly neutral, sometimes just a bit warm, at others a slight chill. the ocean makes the air noticably humid with a slght salt tang, but it's the perfect temperature for it. the slight breeze feels good on your legs, and the white, nearly glowing sand covering the outdoor conference room's floor is pleasing between your toes. your shoes are probably gone with the glass from the previous manhattan... you didn't like those shoes anyway. good riddance!
  
• the keynote was actually pretty good! a little bit dull as you knew all the stuff the keynote speaker was talking about, and she seemed a tiny bit bored herself, like she's given the pitch eleventy-one times already... come to think of it, as she's a founder and cto of a company doing the kind of thing this conference is about, you realize she probably has. her wild perple hair... you've seen it before. the next sip of your drink brings back the memory of its namesake city, and an elevator.

• you were on your way up to the 58th floor for an interview^†, and (yes, the memory is clear now) this nervous seemingly little girl with purple hair and an actual physical portfolio case (black and leather looking and nearly as large as her) rode the lift with you, although you notice she's not as young as she appears: she's just short. you notice that the only other floor selected is 103. and you notice that she is staring at you now, probably because (you realize belatedly) you've been staring at her for at least a dozen floors.
  
• "interview? your first big one?" she asks.
  
• "um... somthing like that," you manage to mumble
  
• "it's dangerous to go alone! take this." as she is saying this (sounds familiar), she's expertly juggling her purse, the comically oversized portfolio case, and something aroud by her left hand. (you feel she just quoted something important, but can't place it)
  
• as the bell for your floor dings and the doors open, she tucks something warm and maybe metal? into your hand and says "quick! put it in your pocket for luck! look at it later or you'll be late. give it back to me someday!"
  
• you nearly fumble putting the whatever-it-is into your pocket as the lift doors are closing. the last you see is a smile as you hear a fading "don't panic!"

• you got the job! you were very nervous at first, but you felt the thing the purple haired girl princess woman gave you in the elevator. every time you started squirming^‡ because of a question asked (c'mon, "where do you see this company in 5 years?" how the hell are you supposed to answer to that?), you got stabbed on the top of your thigh, right in the rectus femoris, by something in your pocket. this sensation was nearly like getting an injection, and you found it distracting enough you couldn't quite focus on the more inane questions (squirm - stab, repeat) and just said what was on your mind. apparently it, whatever 'it' was, was working, as the facial hair on the man bobbed slightly out of sync with his nods. the woman next to him was quiet and very tomboy-ish; if the peter pan played by maud adams on broadway had a kid with the tinkerbell from hook (1992 julia roberts, not the awful 2024 remake with a cg remade kardashian- glack) and they were raised climbing trees in pixi skorts decorated with pink skulls... but decided to put on an immaculately tailored gray zoot suit made just for her by the costume designers of the matrix... (1999, not the 2023 reboot)

Dear, Those Weary of OLD
This time of the year can especially difficult for some that are alone - for whatever the circumstances. We can all agree that love is a fundamental human need (as well as other animals - all you fur parents out there). We are told from a young age that in order to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life you must have that four letter word - LOVE. What if I told you that even though that is completely true, the HOW you get love is actually more important and why it may not be working. I am not a psychologist nor a relationship therapists, I am not a counselor nor a dating expert (although after 20 years of dating, I have some pretty good ideas). This letter are merely thoughts and observations that I have to share for those of you that are feeling alone, forgotten or unloved. No doubt this dumpster fire of a year has surely created isolation and mental health issues for everyone. But, being single and alone presents a much different picture, especially for those desperately looking for a meaningful relationship (more on that in a bit...).
To provide a little context, I have been single for just shy of two years out of relationship that in retrospect I could only describe as a significant life experience that has forged me into being stronger and more resilient man than every before. It was an abusive and toxic relationship that I allowed to continue for way too long - this was my fault. I would like to take the time now to thank God, Yahweh, Allah, Buddah and every other universal spirit that helped guide me back on my path after that relationship. In all honesty, I have a few friends that were beyond helpful through that process - you know who you are ;)
After my break-up, I sat in grief trying to figure out how I got there and where I was going to go. Naturally, I turned to good old online dating. And did so significantly prematurely without realizing all of the self-work that I needed to do to heal myself. I was looking for that next date, the next girl, the next relationship to fill my void. To help cure my lonesomeness, my aching desire for love, to be loved. I have always dated and met women in-person or not through online methods. I had friends who were ranting and raving about how "easy" it was to meet women and how much "fun" you can have. on sites like Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble. I was skeptical because I enjoy the process of connection when meeting someone live and in-person and doing it "old school". Nonetheless, I was so desperate for something different and an easy fix for my newly love lost. That was my first hit of the drug that I call - OLD or Online Dating. And in the words of Rick James, it is one hell of a drug.
For almost two years, I swiped or clicked through thousands of profiles, got tons of numbers, went on dozens of dates, had a few pseudo-relationships that lasted usually no longer that 40-60 days. However, after investing emotional capital, time, financial resources, I still did not find what I was looking for - a true relationship. Ultimately, the whole online dating game became exhausting, time consuming and left me feeling worst about myself than I ever had in my life - sound familiar?... I kept repeating this process over and over reaping the same results. If I could make a standard operating procedure, it goes something like this;

• Every X, profile (20-80) , I would swipe or click or message someone on 1 of my 3 OLD platforms. Continue the search.
• Connect and message back and forth with anywhere from 4-10 people on OLD platform. Most of them will ghost a conversation due to the overwhelming amount of conversations they are trying to have. I am guy, I cannot imagine what it is like for women.
• Get 3 or 4 numbers and take those conversations offline.
• Continue talking on the phone with 2-3 people offline.
• Schedule a date with 1 or 2 of the people from phone numbers.
• Go out on date with 1 maybe 2 of the people from phone numbers. (Step 6 is the first in-person meeting)
• Either go on a 2nd date, hook-up, or stop talking.
• Continue the search on OLD and acquiring phone numbers, meaningless conversations, repeat.

Definition of Insanity: Doing something over and over again the same way and expecting a different outcome.
I literally had dating fatigue (what is this fucking WWII - battle fatigue?) Yes, that is now an actual term. I felt like I was running human intelligence collection for the CIA or something. So how is something that is supposed to be enjoyable and fun been morphed into something onerous for mental health and our self-esteem?
We are attempting to create authentic relationships through inauthentic mediums. We are seeking instant gratification for something that takes time, patience and a little luck to build. We are looking for someone to share that endless "honeymoon" feeling that doesn't exist.
Here is what I am talking about. It has been clearly researched and documented on the cognitive manipulation social media has on its users (i.e. Social Dilemma or Agents of Chaos for a more geopolitical perspective). We are clearly seeing how younger generations suffer from higher levels of depression and lower self-esteem and effects of online bullying. We are seeing the addictive properties of social media and technology and how these platforms are designed to keep the user engaged for a long-extended period of time and for as frequently as possible. We have seen how these social media platforms that were designed to bring us together has actually made us farther apart. We have to remember that OLD is social media.
I used to joke about seeing a group of high schools interacting in a modern group setting, all of them had their phones out and nobody engaging or being present. In my own hypocrisy, I was making fun of those students for something that I was doing myself. While I was swiping away while I wait for my coffee in-line, I wasn't engaging either. How many potential conversations could I have started with potential partners in real life that I missed? I will never know. However, see how starting a real in-person conversation right there in the moment is an instant connection (or not) and in my online dating procedure we don't even get to the in-person communication until Step. 6?... Think about how much time and work that is to text message individuals, many who are only seeking personal affirmation and attention. Attention is interesting because just like with getting a like on Instagram or Facebook, getting likes on a dating website also sends you a hit of dopamine. Literally, just like pulling a slot in the casino.
This leads me to my next observation: people only portray the character that they want to present. As with all social media, people lie. I know, shocking and riveting news. However, I didn't realize the extent that people went to create their "character" online. This little nugget was dropped on me while on a cruising on boat on Lake Washington last summer. I watched as these guys with yachts had attractive woman hanging off the deck, posing as if it was a Sports Illustrated photo shoot. And it was. There were guys out there taking full photo shoots of these girls, sometimes with multiple cameras or phones - all to get that perfect picture to look the best. That day I learned about the Boyfriends of Instagram. Dismal times.
This is the extent some people will go to create the image of themselves on their Instagram page, this obviously bleeds over into online dating. What will someone do to create their character? How far will they go? So, while you are at be at home feeling like a poor and fat loser, living the dull existence, everything you are seeing online is a MicroHollywood - it is all bullshit. Same goes for the finding love online, you will commonly never see the real person (at least not for a while), because initially everything is the facade. From the pictures on the profile to the answers provided, most of it is not authentic. You have to upsell your brand to be competitive.
Then when you meet the real person.... And find out they are not what you thought they were because their portrayal was not authentic. Next move, we just leave. Why, vanish? Because there are millions of other options online. We commonly think that it acceptable to just stop talking to someone and never provide a reason. Imagine if we just walked away in the beginning or middle of every meeting or social interaction, we would have no social networks of any value. But, yet we do it in OLD. Manners in dating are out the window. I have heard the horror stories from many ladies on the infamous "dick pic" which still to this day baffles me that some men think this a legitimate strategy to get laid... We wonder why our intimate online connections are not flourishing?...
There is really great saying and core value amongst the Army Green Berets that I think can shift our perspectives on dating in the modern world - "Quality is Better than Quantity". It rests on the critical value human emotional intelligence plays into how relationships are built and work efficiently. In OLD, what we are actually seeking is that instant gratification through unlimited options for partners instead of seeking authentic and quality in a very shortlist of highly-qualified suitors. It is tiresome to keep putting effort in individuals who do not want to put in a good faith effort.
So, with all this rambling, what the fuck is my point about being sad and lonely during the holidays?... This whole year has been an exercise in self-reflection (or at least isolation). Have you maximized all this time alone? Have you done any self-work to improve yourself for your next potential suitor? I realized that after all of my dating failures that the one common denominator was me - I was selling myself short. I was attempting to achieve something authentic through an inauthentic medium. I have been clean from OLD and social media for a few months and I have to tell you, I have acquired close to 3-4 hours of my day back and my mind feels amazing clear and I feel more at peace.
So those of you frustrated and lonely this holiday season with online dating. Put down the apps, it is a drug that is designed to capture your time and attention, not your heart. Spend this time in isolation to really do the hard work of understanding who you are and what you are trying to achieve in life - nobody knows this greatness, but you. If you have problems with who you are, then those problems will not be cured by anybody else or any relationship - you have got to love yourself for someone else to love you.
Stop looking at what other people have and comparing to what you don't have, remember most of it is bullshit and not real. Most of those people aren't on Learjets, they have studios that look like the interior of an private jet, insane. Having gratitude and helping others was a way that I got out of my dating funk - trust me you may be single, but what are all your other blessings?
Be good to yourself, you deserve all of the positive things in the universe and they will come if you do the self-care. You also have let the universe do its work as well. You will always have love, if you love yourself and who you are. And why shouldn't you?!! You are actually pretty fucking awesome!! And finally, turn off the fucking holiday romantic comedies, they are toxic and unrealistic and will make anybody other than Matthew McConaughey feel like shit.

It's time you quit Furious Tweeters Anonymous and joined me and the Trots for a quiet pint

All this month, people have been talking about a new Netflix documentary called The Social Dilemma, in which a bunch of stubbly Californian tech start-up nerds on a guilt trip worry out loud about how the internet has been hijacked by enormous companies that are now using it to make — gulp — money.
They say that our phones constantly monitor what we do and who we talk to and what we say. And clever algorithms are used so advertisers can target their products and services at exactly the sort of people who might be interested. And this is what, exactly? A bad thing?
If you are a woman and you are experiencing lady problems, you do not want your Facebook feed to be full of ads for agricultural buildings. In the same way, I'm not the slightest bit interested in hearing about an exciting new breakthrough in tampon technology. Targeted advertising makes sense for all concerned, and if Facebook can make a few quid along the way, good luck to it.
"Ah, but," say our stubbly friends from California. "Exactly the same information-gathering and algorithms can be used by political parties to target undecided voters." And ... what's wrong with that? Seriously. What's the difference between doing that and dispatching some smiley dweeb with a clipboard and a pamphlet full of promises to the swing-state housing estates of Hemel Hempstead?
The Social Dilemma, however, did in the end touch fleetingly on a subject that's been troubling me for a little while now. That Google and Facebook and all social media will eventually cause every country on earth to be engulfed by a bloody civil war. Possibly about toothpaste.
When I was a reporter on the Rotherham Advertiser, I'd go for lunch most days with two people who were in the Workers Revolutionary Party. I liked them a lot, and I think they liked me, even though I was very obviously not a member of the Workers Revolutionary Party. We talked about politics, of course, and we'd argue in a good-natured way and then we'd have a couple more pints. And then we'd go back to work.
It was the same story with my dad. He didn't like my trousers and I did not like his. We didn't have similar taste in music either. He thought Dave Greenslade might be the devil. I thought Bach needed to cheer up. And we'd have lengthy debates about hair too. But we never actually fell out over any of it.
Today, though, things have changed, because we can engineer our lives so we rarely encounter anyone who thinks differently. You think you are chatting to your kids in the evening, but actually you're making noises while they're tuned into Radio Greta on social media.
We all follow like-minded souls on Twitter. We have WhatsApp groups, where we share jokes with others we know will find them funny. We watch whatever news channel echoes what we are thinking. We ignore those on Tinder who like Donald Trump, or those who eat meat or who do anything that doesn't belong in our opinion bubble.
That's why people were staggered when the country voted for Brexit. Remainers such as myself were surrounded by other remainers, so we thought everyone was a remainer. It's why everyone at the BBC was bowled over when Boris Johnson won such a massive majority. They couldn't believe it because absolutely everyone in their electronic lives voted for Jeremy Corbyn.
If you are a vegan, it's extremely likely that you will share vegan recipes with other vegans on social media. You may even share stories that say meat is murder and growing cows is destroying the ozone layer. So when you see a picture of a man eating an actual burger, you are horrified. Staggered. Because how could he be so obtuse?
You are going to send him a message, which, because social media allows you to dispense with the niceties of meeting face to face, will be extremely abusive. And then your friends are going to pile in until, eventually, burger man responds in kind and soon everyone is threatening to kill everyone's children.
If you don't believe me, tell someone under the age of 25 that we shouldn't be pulling down statues. But be warned, the response will be so unpretty your phone may well melt.
I don't think there's been a time when society is as divided as it is now. Women versus men. Black people versus white people. Rich versus poor. Right versus left. There are even heated and abusive online arguments about dental hygiene. And it's because people are always absolutely convinced by social media that they have the majority on their side.
The internet was built so you could get a pizza at four in the morning, and find out where James Garner was born while you're on a beach, but it's become home instead to levels of bigotry, rage and hatred not seen since the Trojans opened up that horse.
It will spill out on to the streets in time. It already has in America, where gangs of white supremacists, utterly convinced by social media that 94% of the world is on their side, are roaming around in packs, with Glocks on their thighs and an AR-15 rifle in the boot, just waiting for one of the nation's six Democrats to look at them funny.
The stubbly start-up nerds say it isn't possible to step back from the brink. They say we've created Skynet and that no one's going to come from the future to save us.
But I think it is possible. We just need to remove the cloak of anonymity behind which all social media users can hide. You used to need a licence to own a dog and could have had it taken away if you didn't treat it well. But anyone can go online and say anything they like to anyone in the world, completely safe in the knowledge that they will only ever be found by Heckler & Koch, which will send them an ad for its latest sub-machinegun.

My bafflement is sprouting nicely: Pass me the scythe — I'm up to my ears in agri-jargon and I don't understand a word

I didn't think farming would be especially difficult. I figured that man had been growing crops for 12,000 years and that after such a long period it would be in our DNA. That it would be relaxing. Monty Donnish even. I'd plant seeds, weather would happen and food would grow.
In my mind, then, farming would mostly involve leaning on a gate while munching pensively on a delicious Dagwood Bumstead sandwich, or enjoying a late summer sundowner from behind the wheel of an air-conditioned tractor. It'd all be a festival of crusty bread, lemonade, fresh air and cider with Rosie. Followed by a cheery harvest festival and a big fat cheque from the EU.
I've learnt, however, that all of it is back-breaking and difficult, that there's never time for a ploughman's in the sunshine, that there's no cupholder in my tractor for sundowners or anything else and that to be a farmer you must be an agronomist, a meteorologist, a mechanic, a vet, an entrepreneur, a gambler, a workaholic, a politician, a marksman, a midwife, a tractor driver, a tree surgeon and an insomniac.
I am none of those things, which is why I spend every single evening with my nose buried in a copy of the countryside bible — Farmers Weekly. It's my new favourite thing.
I especially love the fertiliser and machinery adverts, because they all feature fifty-something men and they're all wearing checked shirts and zip-up gilets made from a material that exists only in agricultural supply shops. I want to buy everything they're advertising because it all looks so manly and proper.
The editorial is a bit different, though, because I can't really get my head round any of it. There will be a picture of some sheep, so I'll think, "Ah. I have sheep. I must read this." But after the second paragraph I have to give up and move on because I don't understand a single word.
I therefore switch to a piece about the new agriculture bill, but all I've taken in when I finish it is the sound of a voice inside my head saying, "Concentrate, Jeremy. This is important." The actual words? No. They've just swum about like fish.
I understand now how life is for people who think they might be interested in cars. They pick up a car magazine, and after five minutes they think that maybe the exciting front cover featuring a Porsche on full opposite lock was a con because the text inside seems to be about physics.
I can read about an electronic limited-slip differential and know what the writer means.
I know terms such as lift-off oversteer and axle tramp and torque steer and scuttle shake and I even have a fairly good idea what the motoring writer Gavin Green meant in Car magazine when he said the then new Toyota MR2 suffered from "tread shuffle"\*. For most people, though, this kind of language is gobbledygook.
We see the same problems today with Formula One. The commentators don't translate tech-speak such as "deg" for the viewers. They use it to demonstrate to the drivers and the engineers that they too are part of the inner circle. It annoys me — so, chaps, can you stop saying "box"? And use the word "pit" instead, because then people at home will know what the bloody hell you're on about.
This brings me on to the world of banking. Like a lot of people I have savings, and that means I occasionally have to speak with people called Rupert and Humphrietta. One said in a Zoom call recently that in the previous few months I hadn't "shot the lights out". I had no idea what she was on about. She then tried to sell me a "product", which, it turns out, is only a product in the way that a casino chip on red is a product. I could be wrong, but I'm in no position to know.
I turn occasionally to the Financial Times for assistance on these matters, but, like the car magazines and the F1 commentary, it's far too complicated. Which is why I mostly end up reading the superyacht reviews in the disgusting but strangely engrossing How to Spend It supplement.
I fear, however, that simplification isn't actually necessary in Farmers Weekly, because the readers don't need the jargon translated. When they read that ex-farm spot wheat values are averaging close to £176.50/t midweek, they know what the words mean and what the implications are. Me, though? Not a clue.
I have been writing these farming columns for six months and I have started buying all my clothes at StowAg, so quite often I'm stopped in the street by farmers wanting to know about the moisture content of my wheat or where I am on the idea of levying a carbon tax on farmers who finish their cattle after 27 months.
I have therefore become very skilled at nodding and then suddenly remembering that I must get in the car and go away.
The worry is that I want to learn how to speak farming, but I have no idea how this is possible. I don't have a boss who can take me under his wing, and while I have a land agent, who's brilliant, he is even more un-understandable than Farmers Weekly.
