Deadline for public comments on filling wetlands @ Woodlands = Tomorrow June 18

Below is a collection of notices & comments from Nextdoor, etc.
https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=150393141
From Wyandotte County Administrator's Office, Public Information Officer Unified Government
June 3, 2020
Woodlands Property For Sale. Las Vegas casino owner Phil Ruffin has put the former Woodlands racetrack facility up for sale.
Ruffin bought the several hundred-acre property near Leavenworth Road and I-435 five years ago with plans to reopen the horse track and add a facility with slot machines.
The Unified Government supported those efforts for the past several years, but the Kansas Legislature did not approve needed changes to the Kansas gaming law which would have made reopening the facility profitable.
Ruffin is tentatively selling the land to Scannell Properties which proposes building a one-million square foot warehouse distribution facility and office park with retail development on the corner of the former racetrack land.
Scannell Properties, based in Indianapolis, is a private real estate development firm with more than 300 development projects totaling more than 63-million square feet in 44 states and Canadian provinces.
When the sale is completed, Scannell plans to demolish the crumbling horse and dog tracks later this summer, with the new distribution center opening next year. The distribution facility is expected to create 1,000 new jobs.
70 acres between the new facility and Wyandotte County Lake will be reserved for green space and public walking trails.
The project plans are being reviewed by the Unified Government, State of Kansas, and Army Corps of Engineers. Advancement of the proposed plans will require a local public hearing and approval action by the Unified Government.
http://wyandottedaily.com/corps-of-engineers-kdhe-taking-public-comments-on-woodlands-project/
Here’s how you get a copy of the notice and who you direct those comments to:
Brian Donahue [email protected] (816) 389-3703 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City Regulatory Office 635 Federal Building 601 East 12th Street Kansas City, Missouri, 64106
It asks to reference permit application No. NWK-2020-348 in all comments and/or inquiries relating to this project.
Public Notice is just to fill the 2.34 acres of emergent wetland within the project area (to prep for the construction of a 1+ million square foot commercial warehouse facility, etc), not for the whole project.
Either way, I'm not sure we should fill the wetlands before we've had our voices heard about the overall project, so I'll still be requesting a public hearing.
https://usace.contentdm.oclc.org/utils/getfile/collection/p16021coll7/id/14409
to get approval for the water quality certification to move forward with the project. Petitioning against it may not mean they abandon the project but I think it’s worth it to have a public hearing. At the very least the citizens of the county should have a voice in what goes there if it threatens water quality and water run off.
To request one, we must write to Brian and outline our specific concerns regarding filling the 2.34 acres of emergent wetland within the project area. While they do take into account public interest, their focus (as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) is to determine the environmental impacts of filling the wetlands.
They will grant a public hearing if they think they can learn new things about the environmental impact from the community.
In typical WYCO fashion there is no effort to openly inform the citizens. This has obviously been in action for a long time and we're finding out 2 weeks before the meeting and that info wasn't disclosed in yesterday's public information release it had to be tracked down by a private concerned citizen. Pathetic way to do things but if you're doing things not in the best interest of the people then not informing us untill after is the way WYCO does it.
Bennett Lake feeds Bennett Creek that flows past the old Ranger Station and into the Wyco Lake. Will this dry up the creek? Lots of folks fish in the creek.
Remember they've been wanting to build at the lake and you watch they will sneak it in. 30 years ago "Friends of the Lake" was formed to fight the county who tried to sneak in commercial development. It was almost needed to be reformed last year when the UG began opening plats up for sale. Now, it seems the time has come.
From what I understand they have already plotted the lots out at the lake. My neighbors got the letter letting them know.. it is already happening.. forsale signs will be popping up shortly.
A warehouse and trucking operation in the middle of residential and the lake.
WYCO has a warehouse district. It's called Fairfax -- With lots of empty places to use.
We need more green space. Too many office buildings are vacant, taking up to much space everywhere.. just sitting there empty. I'm sure this will all become another burden to the taxpayers of WYCO.
Run-off from the Legends already negatively affects properties in Edwardsville.
The creeks in Edwardsville have widened and deepened because of the extra run-off. Homes have been affected and businesses have closed on 98th street.
It is currently under contract for 20 million dollars. On the bright side, at least something is happening. The bad side, it’s a trucking warehouse. As a realtor, I worry about the the home values in the area. Nothing is finalized and it could all fall through. Nothing is signed right now. Me suggestion to homeowners is try to sell your house now while the market is hot. The surrounding neighborhoods will take a hit if a trucking warehouse goes in, in my opinion.
WYCO does not need any more failures ie Schlitterbahn which was not even 1/10th the development promised, T-bones stadium mismanaged and allowed to fall into debt and bankruptcy, Land of Oz - That was a big scam Bpu big shots pulled over on us while they made money.
Private pockets get lined every time something is proposed or built. Anyone who believes that our elected officials are doing anything to benefit the people needs to start researching every negative fact based article ever written starting soon after they refused GM from building. Elected representatives need to spend their time serving the people and not naming streets and community centers after themselves.
businesses at Legends didn't have to pay taxes for a couple years. That's why new places move in to Legends and couple years later move out when they have to start paying taxes
Even though elsewhere more commercial real estate lowers residential real estate taxes, doesn't work that way in Wyco the property taxes keep going up. The only ones who benefit are the businesses/companies that get all kinds of financial rewards and decades-long tax breaks to come here and then leave when they have gotten all they can get and of course the "good old boys" who make it happen. Meanwhile our taxes go up every year.
Put something there as long as there isn't any type of incentives given. It's getting ridiculous giving a bunch of money to companies to get them to develop here or anywhere for that matter.
The property cannot be fixed up for gaming as the state wanted more profit than what the facility needed to keep it running, and they refused to open it up fairly to gaming like other facilities in the state were allowed. It was a shame when Woodlands closed but it is much worse driving by property and seeing the decay it had become. A 1,000 jobs would help our community by bringing in tax money.
However, I do not have confidence on follow through with agreements with UGWYCO. Remember Schlitterbahn? Was supposed to use local people to build and operate. Our Laborers had to strike and still UGWYCO allowed construction to proceed, delivering nothing like what was promised.

Well, it looks like you'll be in Saint Louis soon. If so, you should check out the City Museum. It's downtown, it will be very worth it. Also if you're very hungry and want to eat on the cheap I can make a couple recommendations there. Now for my question, have you brought any tools with you and / or what kind of preventative maintenance have you done on the bike in preparation for this trip? Yes I'm excited for St Louis! What's the best part about the City Museum? For maintenance, I clean and wax the chain, check the lights, and check tire pressure around every 600 miles (more like 800 in reality). I bought a puncture repaire kit and a CO2 gun should I need to temporarily fix a flat — lord help me if it ever actually happens.
It's almost to bad you don't have tube type tires and wheels. Not that fun using spoons to change a tube on the side of the road though, but it would beat being stranded or calling for a really expensive tow. I've had good results with tire patches though. Found a Youtube video of it: Link to www.youtube.com It pretty much looks like the coolest thing ever! Will definitely check it out. Link to www.youtube.com On Thursday nights they ban kids and allow alcohol.
OH! One other thing. Should something go wrong between there and here we have a few shops and a motorcycle salvage yard here in town. Basically, you'd be able to get a part locally that you might have to order otherwise. We do have a Ducati Dealership as well. Good to know. Thanks Reganator! That's part of the worry of driving an Italian bike across the country. Not a lot of available Ducati repair shops...

Amazing man. I'm from the UK, and i'd love to do this trip. There seems to be such a diversity in the US, I think it'd be amazing. One question, do you also want to do a route along the Pacific Crest Trail after this? Thanks Man. Honestly I had no idea whether I was actually capable of doing this trip—the longest trip I had done before this was 700 miles on a 3-day weekend. I thought to myself if I make it to NYC and don't want to ride all the way back, I'll sell the bike there and fly home, but after 2,333 miles under my belt for this trip I know I can do it. I'd definitely be down for the Pacific Crest Trail. Especially because it's not too far from San Francisco.
Well I hope you enjoy the rest of your adventure, and any that follow it! You, too Connerbill!
Whats the most inspirational thing, person, or event youve seen so far? This quote by Hunter S. Thompson: "Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?"
One other thing that I learned has to do with the fact that cool stuff you have never seen is closer than you think. I learned I can do roughly 450-500 miles a day easy, 600 miles pushing it—but once I finish this trip I won't need to. Reno for example is only 217 miles (or 3 hours drive) from San Francisco and was actually a really neat place full of art and nice people not just casinos. We're always looking to fly to far off lands when we should be looking at what's around just 3 hours away.
Forgive the paraphrasing, but didnt hst also say "there are two kinds of motorcycle riders, those who have gone over the high, and those who have yet to go over the high side." Oh I've already high sided before. That was the 1st year. I'm hoping that means I've passed that life lesson. Though I do believe one should always ride with fear as their passenger.
What's been the hardest aspect of the trip so far? Early on it was the wind. I'm used to driving for 30 minutes - 1 hr at a time in the city back at home and never wore earplugs even though people recommend it. I think the first big leg of the trip from Reno to Salt Lake City was the worst in terms of wind — Nevada desert AND the flat dry lakebed of Utah. I could still hear the wind in my ears an hour after I got off my bike. It really is the silent killer. Now I wear earplugs or in-ear headphones with music for a few hours (until they get uncomfortable and I put the earplugs back in.)
The wind is also crazy in terms of blowing you off the road or in another lane. Its not as bad since I've left Nevada/Utah but every now and then I get a good gust. You especially need to be aware when passing or being passed by a big freight truck. They bring the wind gust down to 0MPH for a few seconds as they pass you and then it jumps up suddenly.
The trick is the wind can knock around your head but not your bike—which mine is about 450lbs. If you ride too stiff then when the wind moves your head around your arms move your bike around. You need to disconnect those two things, relax your neck and your arms—you ride more comfortably that way, anyways.
This all might sound pretty terrifying but it becomes second nature.
The other aspect is the necessity of pulling over when needed to adjust. If you cross a state line and it suddenly gets colder because you're up in the mountains or the wind is going under your glove and bothering you or you have a dark visor on (when it was sunny) and it's dark now—you need to pull over and change it / fix it. Don't delay because you'll get sick from being too hot / cold or you'll crash from not being able to see with a dark visor, etc. Also sometimes I just want to check my email or see if I have any txts. I'm too much of a tech junkie.
Lastly, sometimes my throttle hand gets tired and I switch on the mechanical cruise control. That shit is scary and I usually only use it for 5-15 minutes at a time on straight roads to give my hand a brake.
TLDR: The wind and pulling over when I know I should.
How many miles per gallon are you getting on that hog? I get about 40MPG or so. My tank only holds about 5 gallons so I need to refuel every 2 hours or so which is a good time for a break anyways. I generally do 2-3 fillups per day. I also have two small MSR backup canisters of gas that will give me about a measly 14 miles but saved me at least once during the trip so far.
Also a Mulsitrada isn't' really a hog. Wikipedia says it best "Essentially the bike is a hybrid of a supermoto and a sport touring motorcycle. Its upright riding position gives it a stronger appeal for those who like touring but want something lighter than a touring bike." The word Multistrada is Italian for "many roads" as the bike is designed to handle asphalt as well as some unpaved surfaces.
I shall accept the term though because most long trekkers ride hogs. :)
Very interesting! I only used the term Hog because I had that scene from dumb and dumber in my head. Hilarious! Link to www.youtube.com
What sort of maintenance or reliability issues have you had with your first generation Multi, if any? This is a GREAT question. First gen Multistradas are known to have gas leaks due to tank expansion because apparently in Europe they don't put 10% ethanol in their gas. I don't know if we do that in California but in most every state I've been to outside of Cali I see stickers on the gas tank that says "Uses up to 10% ethanol". It worries me some, but so far no problems with that.
I did have this problem with my rear brake light "burning" out every 700-1k mile or so. It's due to the vibration of the bike. The lightbulb is actually really difficult to replace, you have to get to screws in weird positions and takes like 10 mins to get the case off so instead of worrying about that I opted to replace the whole backend with an single LED system I installed myself right before the trip...
Turns out the new system is not water proof and when it rains some of the LEDs went out (they came back on when it was dry). I had to duck tape the sucker in the rain. Never buy motorcycle parts on Amazon...

Congrats on your bike choice, by the way. I don't know many people in USA that ride Ducati. If they ride a European bike at all, it's often for nostalgia reasons, so they go for Triumph Bonnies or Royal Enfield or some café racer custom build. Ducatis are quite popular in the Bay Area of California but not out here. People comment on it all the time.
Since there's a lot more to be seen on local highways than there are on limited access freeways, are you mostly driving down them or are you taking interstates? Great question. I say its about 90% interstate when I'm driving. Some people ride to enjoy the twisty roads, I also enjoy the twisty roads but am more fascinated by actual towns and cities (and it's people). The freeways take you there. Once I reach a city then I will explore the outskirts and an occasional trail.

Here is a pano from a country road in Kansas: Link to 25.media.tumblr.com
TLDR: I do like to take the side roads but at the same time I'm trying to keep the trip around a month.
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a really interesting journey! Stay safe out there and best of luck. Thanks Corey_Howard! Will keep postin' updates!
These photos are absolutely beautiful...i'm still in high school but i've always dreamed of buying a harley and doing a cross-country motorcycle trip. i see all these photos of places that i've never been and i think that's what inspires me. Follow your dream and travel not only in the USA but all around the world whenever you get the chance! It is the best thing a person can do to be a well rounded person.
With riding so many miles in a day, how do you make sure to take time to "experience and document America" as opposed to just riding from point A to point B? I get up really early. I try to get up at 7am and do 150 miles or more before breakfast. I try to pack and prep everything before bed so all I have to do is brush up, put the bags on the bike, and go in the morning.
It doesn't always work out that way, though. Sometimes I snooze to 9am and am out by 10am. Those days, if I'm really looking forward to visiting that city, I will stay for a whole extra day there. Every now and then I just do a 300 mile day. Break day for me and more time in town.
Also, to help be flexible I usually book my AirBnB like 8 hours ahead of time. I get cheap places with interesting people that are $40-65 a night. I figure I could always get a motel if it doesn't work out and so far it hasn't failed me yet. In fact, it has been pretty crucial in helping me make new local friends (and their friends) fast.
Ya'll are just full of great questions!
Ah! Which one? North city or Manchester location? I actually live just a few blocks from the Manchester store. Manchester! Come have lunch with me so I can interview you for my blog!
Lol, I'll see if I can make it. Stomach is a little messed up at the moment from a diet change, trying to get back in shape after a rough to of it at school. Give me just a few to take a shower and hop on the bike. Ok, we could always meet up after lunch, too if that's better. I got space on my moto if you have an extra bike/moto helmut. Also I've been in this line for over an hour. Crazy!
Wow. I've never actually eaten at that place but my fiancé has. Had no idea they would be so busy for a weekday lunch. Sounds good. Will PM you my info! Great hanging with ya @Reganator! Link to i.imgur.com Hit me up whenever you're in SF and we shall do the same!
As far as the bike goes, no problem. I've got a helmet and my own bike to go with it. I'll see where you are after I hop out of the shower.
What was your job back in San Francisco? And also, what do you plan on doing upon your return? Thanks Tumblr makes things look simple and beautiful. So glad I didn't set up a Wordpress instead.
I was the technical lead and CTO of a startup that was doing well. I found a good replacement for me before I left.
I plan to try my hand at being an independant developer and making iPhone apps.
I've always wanted to do this! quick question, are you using a gps? maps? how do you read the gps if you are on a motorcycle? I have a Garmin Zumo 650 motorcycle GPS. I wired it into my battery so I don't need to worry about it's battery and it's also waterproof and drop resistent. I must have dropped it on the ground a dozen times and it's still going strong. It's also touch sensitive with a gloved finger. It can even pair with one of those intercom headsets you can place inside your helmet, which I currently do (scala rider g2, I think). It's by far not a perfect GPS—so bad in so many ways, but it's the best thing out there right now. It's pretty old now and still wicked expensive and there have been newer versions of it that have come out but the reviews of the new stuff is far worse than this guy so I keep using it.
I also use an iPhone with in-ear headphones and Google Maps / Apple maps as a backup. When in the city, sometimes its easier just to type the name of a place or tell Siri to do it and get voice directions. For longer trips I like the Garmin as I like to physically see how much distance is left to go.
What do you plan to do after you've finished your trip? I want to try my hand at making useful iPhone apps. Just visions in my head for now (and in my notebook). If it doesn't work out then I'd get a "real job" again.
This trip has actually given me a lot of time to think about that.
Did you have a couple possible or likely jobs lined up before you left? And what area were you working in before your trip? I've been wanting to do a trip like this sometime in the future but I don't know how easy it would be considering the job situation. I've been wanting to do this trip for a long time, too! I saved up enough money to last me about 2 years. When I get back I'm going to learn Objective-C and build my own iPhone apps for money. If that doesn't work out and I run out of money I'll find a "real job".
Part of my last job involved growing the company and it was hella hard as the market is dry. All the gaming companies have hires up all the good guys. I know of one gaming company that isn't even well known that grew from 115 devs to 300 in about one year. I think I'm a good dev and could find a quality job if I tried. Who knows though!
As someone who has never driven a car (or taken drivers ed) but wants a motorcycle (sort of like yours), what advice would you give? Is the process of getting a motorcycle hard, and what is it like? How do you keep it from being stolen? I love the rain, how are motorcycles in the rain? Any other tips? Take the MFS (Motorcycle Saftey Foundation) course. It's a 3-day class, one day in the classroom and 2 days on the street. You come in knowing nothing and come out as a motorcyclist. Its in pretty much every city and at least in California you don't have to take the road test, just the written one if you pass.
What's more is that your insurance may discount you for taking the course and a lot of motorcycle gear shops will give you 15% off if you bring in your passing certificate. Moto gear is expensive!
As for rain, it sucks. In SF i just ride through it but here on the open road I pull over and take a break or even get a motel if I know its going to be a few hours. Rain is usually not too much of a problem driving-wise. Just takes a little longer to stop and to start. Unless its really pouring and blocking visibility or cold out. I just don't like having wet gear.
Hope that helps!
What was riding on the salt flats like? How fast did you go, and for how far? Link to spiritacrossamerica.com
Next door to this place, in the middle of nowhere is the Salt Flats Cafe. A mexican restaurant. For $7 you get A LOT and it's good!

Please disregard this question if you've already answered it. Where do you sleep when you're not staying with relatives or friends? I answered this as part of another answer but it's ok. I usually book AirBnB's about 8 hours ahead of time. It's a website that lets you stay in an extra room or sometimes a whole house of a local stranger (I like to think of them as friends I haven't met yet.)
They generally have reviews and pics so you know what you're getting in to. I usually pay about $40-65 a night for 'em and some of them have been really nice, artistic, or unusual. They are also critical for me in making new friends quickly. Much better than staying in clean and sterile motels at each city that all look and feel the same.
What's your favorite subway sandwich? 6-inch meatball on italian herbs and cheese bread with american cheese and lettuce, toasted. I try to avoid fast foods though. Don't want that motorcycle gut.
I want to know what you did to get ready to have you butt in the saddle for this long? I did a 500 mile ride once and it wreaked me. Be safe and watch out for deer in the wooded areas. My seat is pretty comfy but I do change up my riding positions every now and then and take a break about every two hours. So far the only achy part has been my back occasionally. I also do a lot of stretches when I'm off the bike. Thanks, I fear retarded deer and have a deer whistle on the front wheel fairing!
I swapped out my original seat and got one from Corbin. It was well built and the support was outstanding. The guy I bought my bike from on CL three years ago was a long distance guy and he tricked the bike out with comforts. I'm pretty sure I have an aftermarket seat. I also installes a USB port myself for charging.
How many sets of tires do you plan on going thru? I have no idea about tires but I replaced them both a year before this trip and I think they'll last the entire trip. I check my whole bike out every 6-800 milea in any case!
The USB ports are sweet hook up on a bike! I currently have an 1992 DR 650 dual sport with the stock seat but it is one of those thick foam deals. It did the job on a 100 mile ride thru the mountian trails. The USB thing is relatively easy since it's 12v just like your battery.
I want to Honda Goldwing and do a trip up PCH to Washington then over to Montana, down to back of the Rockies and home thru the Grand Canyon. I did it in a car when I as 18 and had a blast. Trip idea sounds like a blast!
What would you rather encounter in the middle of the night on a lonely stretch of road while taking a pee break; 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck? 100 duck sized horses. I'd be afraid a horse sized duck would knock over my bike.
I'd probably put 1 duck sized horse in my top case to give to my brother in Louisville.
But then you would leave only 99 duck sized horses. That would collapse the universe. Some people just want to watch the world burn...
But not me. In that case I'd put the horse back!
What has been the general cost of everything (gas, lodging, food etc.) for this trip? I know you're not done, but based on what you've done so far and what you've budgeted for, how much is it looking like this will cost total? Hi, I wrote this out in detail in another comment response. Sorry can't link it, on my phone. :)
I think about doing this every single day of my life, except on a bicycle. As for the bicycle. Do it up bro and if you need advice or feedback hit me up. I've only done 100k in Death Valley in my cycling days but it was awesome. I'm sure a bicycle would be a whole other experience and you should blog about it. I know I would read it. Definitely wear a Camelbak.
How long did it take you to finally flip the table ╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻\ and say "screw it. I'm out of here," and did you feel more liberated or panicked after you had done so? I'm glad I'm doing it and with so much done I feel good that I'm actually going to be ok. It's still a little scary to think I'm not even halfway done but when I'm actually on the bike I feel less scared and more confident and I've seen some really cool shit. The fact that people actually read the blog inspires me, too. Really makes me feel I'm not doing this by myself and that we're sharing this experience together.
Seems like an awesome trip and a life-defining experience. However, if it were me, I'd be heading through Central America and ideally into South America. Did you ever consider something like this with a more international flair? I think realistically if I don't die or get severely injured on this trip that in a year or two I will have the hankering of doing just that or even going north through Canada to Alaska.
This is a great first big trip as everyone speaks English and food, gas, and ATM machines are bountiful. Not sure what to expect on those other trips.
I hear you but those aspects are exactly what make that kind of travel rewarding in its own way. Good luck to you though! Indeed! Once I conquer one challenge I shall need a harder one and that sounds about right.
I'm 30 next months, can I come and join you on your next trip? way to go for living the dream! Thanks 30 is where its at. We have to live some of our dreams before we have kids. You can join me but you have to book all the cool AirBnBs and help plan good routes!
How much have you budgeted for the trip, and did you budget well? Happy travels! Thanks! I just answered this in detail in another question. Sorry I'm on my phone and don't know how to link it!
I second that: The City Museum is amazing! And St. Louis is a great small city. I'm moving there next month actually. I regret the rainstorm that prevented me to spend twice the amount of time there. Will try to see a lot there tomorrow!
Hey, another cross-country road tripper! We're traveling around giving away free pie. If our paths cross, we'd love to swap road stories and give you food. We'll be in Little Rock June 26th and OKC June 29th. Awesome. Our paths may very will cross, my schedule is so flexible I'm not sure where I will be at any current time but I will PM you should I be near those cities on those dates. Ride safely and enjoy!
Why not just take 2 weeks for off. The trip was going to take at least a month (probably 5 weeks now from the looks of it) but I'm actually going to start working for myself when I return.
When in Kansas, be sure and stop by for the tree. You mean stop at any tree? Or is The Tree a place?
Kansas has a tree, somewhere. Done!
What will you do when youve completed your dream. Get a new one. ;)
When you get to New Haven, you really ought to go to Pepe's pizza. Anyone who tells you to go to Sally's is a heathen (even though it's still pretty damn good). Thanks! I will have to try them both and compare!
How much in total will this trip cost you. I'm not exactly sure. I spend about $13 in gas per fillup every 180 miles or so. 6,500 miles / 180 = 36.1 fillups = $469 in gas.
AirBnB's go from $40-65 (at least the ones I use) so we'll average at $55. At an estimated 30 days for this trip about 1/4 of the time I woll be staying at friends or family = 23 days I'm paying. 23 days * $55 = $1265.
Food really fluctuates but I'll say I spend $7-12 dollars per meal (It's my vacation ok?). But I usually only eat 2-3 meals a day with some light snacking. Factoring days I'm with people the food is free = 23 days * 2.5 meals a day = 58 meals * $10 = $580.
Plus $40 in water and other supplies I'm buying here and there. $40 in souvenirs.
So total is: $469 gas $1265 rent $580 food $80 misc = $2394 estimate total for most expenses of the trip.
Someome can double check those numbers as I'm on my phone in St Louis. Waiting in line for Sweetie Pie's restaurant.
Then there's the $500 I spend tuning the bike up for the trip. And the x amount of dollars I'm paying for rent for my apartment at home for a month I'm not there. When I reach NYC I will need to do a 30k maintenance on the bike which I don't know how much it will be.
Hope that sheds some light!
NYC is a must for a trip like this. But just be careful, people drive VERY fast over here. Yeah and switch lanes fast! Especially those crazy taxis. I am prepared, I think.
Well then, guess all I can say is thanks for living my dream for me! Thanks for your recommendations, seriously! I will hope to visit those places one day.
Do you have any Naruto stickers on your motorcycle? Can't say that I do POOPING_BUTT_FACE.
How do you plan to remedy this? I'm putting them on my bike as we speak...

Any chance of a modernized Rampage game? It's been far too long since a Rampage game has been released. I was an Employee of Bally Midway when I conceived RAMPAGE and as such, don't have the rights. It's out of my hands unless WB taps me on the shoulder... (hint)
Why not make a rampage flavored game with new characters? For me, the fun of Game Design is bringing new things to the table...
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I did RAMPAGE as an employee, and 10 years later did RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR as Game Refuge. When we were asked to do another one, we presented Midway with a very cool, completely redesigned , 3D re-invention of the Game, but Midway told us that they would rather that we simply keep doing the same game over and over. Where's the fun in that?
So we politely said, "Thanks, but no Thanks."
What games do you play now these days? Kind of embarrassing, but when you spend all day every day making games, you tend to shy away from doing it in your spare time. I love watching my kids play UNCHARTED and DEAD SPACE 2 from a reclining position on a nearby couch, however.
What are you thoughts on emulators such as Mame, which enable people to play old arcade games which are otherwise nearly impossible to find? It's great, as far as it goes... Unfortunately, Arcade Games were often designed to NOT use controls that were easily duplicated by home systems, so games like DISCS OF TRON or ZWACKERY which used a spinning, spring-loaded knob and an 8-way Gorf Handle with a Trigger and Thumb button, have no hope of being played or evaluated properly.
I love Rampage, it truly brought me closer to my family. Nothing quite like a cooperative romp through a city. Do you game with your family? If so, which games do/did you enjoy the most? My time with my family is spent mostly in the real world, camping, swimming, hiking laying around the back yard. We had an arcade in the basement, but I kicked the kids outside as often as possible. Actually, one of the single biggest Game Titles that we all played "as a Family" was HALF LIFE, oddly enough.
What is your favorite game you have designed so far? Depends on how you mean it... I'm proudest of RAMPAGE, I love playing PIGSKIN head-to-head as an Arcade game here in the office, but for group fun... gotta be ARCTIC STUD POKER RUN as a Cash based LAN contest.
Awesome! Are there any games you created that you were disappointed with after they were released? The definitive answer here is ZWACKERY, a fun sword and sorcery exploration game that tested very well. But at the last minute, the management decided to try to justify the cost of a new, very expensive, hardware they were developing by having ZWACKERY use it; even though it was not developed for its capabilities. The high cost of the final game earned it the distinction of being the lowest selling game in history, only about 175 Cabinets were sold. Bummer.
Hey, at least it was a record breaker on way or the other :D. :)
What is the funniest or weirdest thing that's ever happened in the studio? Most of our fun stuff happens outside the office on a sunny day, "you can do that when you work at a game company". But the best was when we were at paramount studios one time, sneaking around the back lot while working on STAR TREK VOYAGER when we were accosted by a cigar-chomping Levar Burton, who demanded to know what we were doing on his closed set. I was speechless and terrified, but the animator with me was a huge trekkie and immediately started spouting his favorite STV episodes... all of which were directed by, you guessed it, Lavar Burton. Problem solved.
I love Rampage. Playing World Tour when I was young taught me a good bit of geography. Question: which monster is your favorite? Ralph's my boy. I'd like to say George, because it was my photograph as a human, but since the human photograph for Lizzie was Rae, my wife, I think I better say that.
Rampage, General Chaos, Xenophobe and the such have a very similar, striking art style. Was this a symptom of the limitations, or truly how you intended these games to look? Yes and Yes! My cartoon style is my cartoon style, and I can't help what that looks like. But, I took great pride in the fact that I was able to deliver a great deal of expression in my characters faces despite my extreme limitations of 16 available colors.
Do you do the game programming? Which langauge/s do you use? What is your computer setup/equipment? I do not do game programming, my background is art and animation. But our setup in the studio now is mostly Windows PCs and we currently use the Unity Game Engine and the C# language to program our games. In the past we have used the Torque engine to make games such as ARCTIC STUD POKER RUN and THE KOMATSU CHALLENGE, and every Arcade game had its own proprietary hardware to adapt to...
I Loved General Chaos, Rampage, and Xenophobe. I must say, I was not happy with the way Kansas City was depicted in Rampage- Cows and Silos? Really? My kids still play rampage on Wii. Forgive me, but the game is meant to depict the soul of the place as perceived by the rest of the world, not as it is. Games ain't reality. Cows and Silos are Fun.
Ah, how the truth hurts. Have you developed much for Android? Not yet! Talk to me in 3 months...
As a big fan of the retro age of video games, and as someone who is aspiring to make games in the future, what advice would you give me in this current market? Link to www.youtube.com
This link has great advice, some of it from me, and even though the Documentary is a bit dated, the advice is still the same.
Since it seems most of your catalog is in the arcade business. How difficult was it for you when Arcades fell to the wayside? Actually, fewer than half of my games are Arcade Games. But really, we've been pretty lucky... manufacturers/publishers still tap us on the shoulder and we turn our attention to whatever is at hand... That's part of the Creative Challenge that keeps things interesting for me as a designer.
How did you come up with the idea for General Chaos? Was it always intended to be a Genesis title or was it something you'd wanted to make for a while? Looking backwards from General Chaos at my previous arcade work, the progression of squad based gameplay (controlling multiple characters) is pretty clear… our last arcade game for Midway, Pigskin 621, allowed players to control a six-man team of sword-wielding rugby enthusiasts. It’s predecessor, Arch Rivals was the first game to let players use real basketball strategies because they were controlling a two-man basketball team instead of a single character, and even Sarge let players pretend to be a one-man army by jumping back and forth between a tank and a helicopter. One of the first games I got excited about after getting into the industry was a game called ANT RAID, in which two players controlled entire angry hives of marauding ants fighting over food.
Loved that game on my old Mega Drive growing up. Me and my dad used to play it for hours! :D. In the end, General Chaos was just a natural extension of the little kid with army men in the sandbox saying “you go here, you go over there, and you... you guard this dump truck with your LIFE!”
I love Rampage. But I've always wondered: why include a giant werewolf? I mean, I get the big ape (King Kong) and the big lizard (Godzilla). But why a werewolf, which isn't typically associated with towering size, rather than one of the more archetypical giant monsters (such as robot, insect, blob, etc.)? Efficiency, for one thing... I wanted to re-use George's Body animation sprites, so he had to be furry, and the Players had to be able to tell at a glance who was who, so a Grey Wolf with Pointy Ears seemed ideal. Jeff liked the onomatopoeia of the name RALPH, which sounded like a canine growl... and the rest is history.
If you had to explain who you were to a stranger, but you couldn't use words, you could only play one song for them, what song would you choose? Heart of Saturday Night by Tom Waits... ... the innate optimism trumps the melancholy...
My questions are, have you considered making a Pigskin-esque game for modern consoles/computers? Why do you think there are so few "pseudo-sport" games historically? Also, was Pigskin considered a commercial success? Link to www.gamerefuge.com
Rampage was one of my favorite games as a kid! I've always wondered two things about the original. First, what was the inspiration for Ralph? I know where the idea of Lizzie and George came from but Ralph doesn't seem to be inspired by anything. Also, how did you all decide on the three names of the monsters? Thanks, I'm a huge fan of the series! I wanted to re-use George's Body animation sprites, so he had to be furry, and the Player's had to be able to tell at a glance who was who, so a Grey Wolf with Pointy Ears seemed ideal. Jeff liked the onomatopoeia of the name RALPH, which sounded like a canine growl... and the rest is history.
"George" looked like a George (Of Mice and Men), and Lizzy was a nice, gender appropriate pun.
If you had to eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? How about for drinking? I can't answer that in a forum where children may be present. Michelob Ultra.
What infuriates you the most when designing? Rigging? Modeling? Everything having to do with game creation is ultimately satisfying, regardless of the myriad problems, snafus and general insanity that pervades every aspect of the process.
"Infuriating" is a word I reserve for the business side of things.
How did you come up with the idea for Rampage? How big was the team that worked on it back then? I was discussing the limitations of the current hardware with co-workers Sharon Perry (nee Barr), Jim Belt, Jeff Nauman and Mikey Bartlow, when it occurred to me that the annoying rectangular constraints were ideally suited for only one thing: a building collapsing upon itself. It was only a small step from there to giant monsters smashing buildings, which was enough of a hook to convince us to start drafting a game proposal. Middle management, however, was less than receptive to something that was so far outside the norm, and the unusual idea seemed slated for oblivion. So I went directly to the office of the new President of Bally/Midway, Maury Ferchen who, needless to say, loved the unique concept. The game went on to break all previous earnings records. Here is a shot of the Original Team. (That's me in the towel).

What are you working on next? Currently beta testing an ambitious "Flirtual Reality" Facebook Game for TrulySocial and an iOS Mobile game that I can't really mention yet. In our spare time we're working on something that we're very excited about, a sequel to the cult classic Genesis game GENERAL CHAOS, GC2: SONS OF CHAOS. We're currently putting the Kickstarter together for it now, for launch on September 9!
You haven't played any of the newer versions of Rampage? Nope. But to be fair, I still have the original Arcade games in my Office. Besides, when you make games for a living, you don't spend as much time playing games as people think.
Socks on or socks off? Socks off baby!!!
Given RAMPAGE was an arcade classic, was is your take on how arcades are going today? Last I went into a Gameworks it felt more like a casino that arcade, what with 80% or more of the machines more or less gambling for tickets. What do you think of this trend and do you see it changing ever back towards what it once was? Yeah, as a nation we seem to be bringing our kids to mini gambling establishments rather than to a place that engages them on a social, skill or intellectual level. Some of the finest Arcades around use the Free-To-Play model, and these places seem do be doing very well.
How would you bring Rampage into the modern era if you were able to? Would it be an HD remake? Would it be a 3D world? Would you give a sharp cel-shading and keep the same addictive formula? Wow. Thank you for sharing that with me. You have no idea how great it feels to hear a story like that.
Xenophobe - I liked this game as a kid, but was it even beatable?? It had a finite number of Levels, Yes, but the last couple were pretty near impossible to complete. And, NO, there was no ultimate reward screen or Final resolution.
What is your favorite sandwich to eat and what sandwich would you be for the rest of your life? To eat...? Portillo's Beef and Sausage Combo, dipped; no question. (Chicagoans know what I'm talking about...)
To be...? I guess that would have to be a Hero Sandwich. (I'm a legend in my own mind)
What would you say is the most career defining game you've released? But on a personal, professional level, it would have to be GENERAL CHAOS, because the story of Game Refuge and the story of how General Chaos came to be are really one and the same. An EA producer contacted me out of the blue one day and asked if I’d consider coming to work for them. The thought of doing games for EA was very appealing, but I wasn’t really interested in relocating to California. I was working out of my home two-three days a week at that time, and I was pretty happy with the flexibility in my current situation. After several weeks of exchanging employment options & possibilities, they made me a very attractive offer: IF I started my own company, they would do whatever game I wanted to do, sight unseen! As great as that sounds, it was still quite a big risk. since I couldn’t sign any papers, discuss any terms or even talk about what the first game might be until after I left Williams-Bally/Midway.
How did you go about designing the monsters from RAMPAGE? I started with the faces, figuring that the humor was only possible if I could get the expressions right.
The animations started with the fist, my fist, which would show up in ARCH RIVALS and PIGSKIN in later years.
Do you still play any of the games you designed? I know I do :D. Nice to hear, thanks. I play all of the Arcades I still own, and spend hours on long winter's evenings playing the Touch Screen Countertop games in my basement Barcade (TouchTunes Playportt & Merit Megatouch) with a cold beer in one hand.
Brian, I was obsessed with Rampage as a kid. I got the game genie one Christmas and a friend and I spent a day or whatever to beat the game. If I remember correctly all it says when you beat the game is "congratulations" and then it starts all over again. I remember that moment as one of the biggest letdowns of my life! WTF?? Sorry Raaa...andy,
But you have to realize that those early ports were simply quickly knocked-off copies of the Arcade Game... and folks tend to forget that in the Arcade, a multiplayer game meant that people could join the action at any given moment, so even if someone was already playing for hours, a total stranger could "buy in" and pick up the game at level 10, or level 150!
So it didn't make any sense to "End" the game, since at any given moment people may have just started playing... Hence no Cinematic ending or Finale on any of my early games... since they were not designed to be played anywhere but the arcade.
Once I realized that having an Hit in the Arcade meant that it would end up as a home game too, I started putting in a Huge reward sequence for completing the game.
The ending on RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR was infamous, even banned on some systems for being too Risque...
Wow thank you for creating most of my favorite childhood games I am so excited for a remake of general chaos me and my friends still play it occasionally. My question is what is your favorite game you have created and why? Depends on how you mean it... I'm proudest of RAMPAGE, I love playing PIGSKIN head-to-head as an Arcade game here in the office, but for group fun... gotta be ARCTIC STUD POKER RUN as a Cash based LAN contest.
But actually, the game that has been the most FUN for me personally was an Advergame that I created for the CON EXPO tradeshows from 2005 through 2011, THE KOMATSU CHALLENGE. It was a Racing Game on a 100 foot wide six player stage set that thousands of people would play while I watched from the wings. VERY gratifying.

Rampage was the first game I received for the nes! What are you currently working on? Link to www.reddit.com
How do you feel about sloths? Sloth? Three toed or two toed?
As one of the seven deadly sins... I prefer Lust. Tho I look like I prefer Gluttony.
Grew up playing with my friends in General Chaos. Used to love the Grenade (I think) guy because he looked like Chuck Norris. Thanks for the entertainment. My question is about the sequel. Will bazooka man still be op? All of the original Grunts will be included, (i.e., the CHUCKER, the LAUNCHER, the BLASTER, the SCORCHER and the GUNNER), and quite a few new ones as well.

, I would like to not only thank you for this AMA, but thank you as well for believing in freshly graduated students to work under your wing. I'm friends, and was in the same graduating class, with one of your employees and I remember him telling me that he loves working there. Advice: Have fun. Balance Creativity with Common Sense. Problems are challenges, and each one is an opportunity to become a better designer.
I am a high school student looking into getting into game design. What are your suggestions to students like me? Do whatever you can with the tools available... don't NOT do something because you're worried about it looking less than perfect. Its more important to get the creative-problem-solving experience than it is to wait for that perfect idea.

Is that your family in that picture? It's actually my work family.
In your opinion, what has been the most significant change(s) to triple AAA game development since the old console days? Thats easy. Hundreds of People & Millions of dollars per title.
Oh, you also made me popular because I had pigskin and other kids didn't! You're not alone, the time it took to use the DPad to move the Cursor to the desired spot cost a lot of soldiers their lives! Which is why we're hoping to remake the game with Touchscreen capabilities in the very near future. Look for information about our upcoming GENERAL CHAOS II Kickstarter on our Facebook page... Link to www.facebook.com
I have always been a fan of Rampage in particular, although I'm sure you're hearing that a lot, and am excited for this AMA! What are your opinions on the newer Rampages, like World Tour and Total Destruction? Or have you not even really bothered to pay them much heed? I did World Tour as well, so I paid a great deal of attention to that one. I never paid too much attention to any of the subsequent ones, however.
Here's a link to last night of the Creation of RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR... Link to www.youtube.com
I'm a big fan of the original rampage. If I can ever find a machine locally, I'd buy it in a second and put it in my game room. What early 80's arcade game (that you didn't have a part in) is your favorite? Battlezone.
So when you were working on 1982, did you think " in the future there will be high tech computers affordavle for everyone and consoles 1000x more powerful than current gen? No way. My first 40 MB hard drive was as big as a Portable Dishwasher. (No exaggeration!)
I don't predict technology with much accuracy. I predicted BETA over VHS, asserted that no one would PAY for cable TV and I was convinced that the Internet was a fad.
What movie would you like to make into a video game? Hmmm... CLOCKWORK ORANGE would be fun, lots of opportunities for Squad based Mayhem.
Though Woody Allen's interpretation of EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX could offer some entertaining possibilities as well.
If you weren't a game developer what would you have become? Short Order cook was always a favorite gig. I won international awards as an animated filmmaker, so maybe I'd have ended up there.
How did I miss this AMA?!?!?!?! :-( When I was in grade 5, we were told to give a presentation on our greatest achievements. I told my classmates I got the top score on Xenophobe, and was published in Nintendo Power. I "forgot" to bring the magazine to class that day... Was this a thinly veiled confession? ...Or do I have to have our editorial staff pour though all of the old issues of Nintendo Power to find out who you really are?
Rampage was my childhood. That game was just too fun! In fact, i still play it whenever I have time. Who came up with the ideas of monsters destroying cities? Genius! That would be me; though, for the record: I am not a genius. Just a legend in my own mind.
How many games have you worked on? The following are games that I worked on, more or less in chronological order. Of the 80 games listed, I served as an artist/animator on all... a contributing designer on about three quarters of them... and was principal designeteam lead on at least half of them. 30 of them were my original concepts as well.

What exactly is Advergaming? Does that feel like making normal games for you? How does that make you feel? An Advergame is simply a game made for a client who is trying to promote something.., Believe it or not, if the client understands that the game has to be FUn to get the message across, they can be evry bit a satisfying as a mainstream game joy to create!
Link to www.gamerefuge.com
How did you get in the video game industry? I really backed into it. I was an animated filmmaker working as a "roving cartoonist" ... doing Ads for local Taverns & Restaurants. I answered an Help wanted Ad at the Bally Midway company... I thought I was answering an Ad to paint pinball back-glass art.
When they said they wanted me to do art for video games I was kinda disappointed, the screen art was still at the PAC MAN level... Still, they were willing to pay me real money, as opposed to the free beer and popcorn arrangement I was used to.
When I got the job, I thought that childhood was officially over.
I was wrong... ;)
You can get more details here: Link to www.youtube.com
If i were to ask you for an address so i can send some of my Classic NES Consoles (such as Rampage) for an autograph, would you be up for it? i would pay postage both ways, and provide pre-addressed boxes for you to just pop the signed stuff in and send her back. :) Sure, pyro; I'd be delighted. Believe it or not, we talked about offering that as one of our "Rewards Tiers" in our first Game Refuge Kickstarter, (launching next week) but we decided against it... sounded a bit too full of ourselves. Send an email to [email protected] and tell her "Brian sent you"
Why can't I play pigskin anywhere? Are we talking about the mid-late 90's arcade game? That game was awesome! Yep. PIGSKIN 621AD was our No Rules" follow-up to ARCH RIVALS. Its still the Arcade Game I play most often here at the Game Refuge offices. It gets a lot of serious, non-stop play at Christmas parties every year, too, for some reason.
Are there any King of Kong style high score competitions with your games? Loved Wreck it Ralph... Felt like they made it just for me. The whole office took me out to see it for my Birthday.
What did you think of WreckIt Ralph? Link to www.facebook.com
Rampage was one of the few games I ever remember playing with my mom, great times. Loved Xenophobe as well. You're directly responsible for me parting with so many quarters. Question: I quit my job and became a mobile game designer this past year. Are you as excited as I am about the resurgence of classic 2D games for mobile platforms? Hard to say, since I can only Guess what your level of excitement is... But I think the transparency and democracy of independents developing for Mobile Platforms will be bringing a much needed shot of passion and creativity into the industry! The direct access to the player means that the game, not the marketing buzzword(s), will determine it's success.
What cool stuff do you have leftover from your days at ballymidway? any proto stuff? Sure. A couple of my Games are cobbled-together prototypes, and I tried to snag as many Headers (Game Marquees) and Vinyl side art panels as I could. Lots of Memorabilia, Trade show stuff, stickers, flyers etc...
If you ever have time, you should take some pics and share that type of thing with the internet. Who knows what long lost cool swag you have. It'd be cool to document it. We're starting to do just that on our Game Refuge Facebook Page; adding photos of some of our one-of-a-kind cabinets and assorted memorabilia.

I LOVED Rampage as a child. Who was your favorite monster to play as? I always liked Lizzy. George...no question! I am George and George is me.
Which do you prefer designing... the older, simpler games or the newer, much more involved games? Both, actually.
I love creating games that start with a simple, intuitive, game-play mechanic, which can then be wrapped in tons of nuance. Simple for the player who wants simple, but more involved for the player who wants to discover more.
Sometimes I'm guilty of going over the top with the amount of "nuance" I pile into a game, as evidenced by a recent full contact FPS/Racing/Poker game I did called ARCTIC STUD POKER RUN... which can be downloaded for free at www.arcticstud.com ... Link to www.gamerefuge.com
General Chaos was an amazing game, I can't thank you enough for the numerous memories ! Why did you make it so hard ? :D. Lol! I know exactly what you're taking about; using the DPad to move that cursor wasn't ideal, a lot of blood could be lost in the few seconds it took for the Cursor to get from one place to another!
That's exactly why we're going to use a TouchScreen control interface in the new one! All you'll have to do is tap the guy you want and tap the spot you want him to go to! Let the CHAOS begin...
Holy shit! General Chaos was amazing, what platforms are you planning on for General Chaos II? PC first; Touchscreen &/or Mouse controls, Multiplayer across LAN/Internet.
Touchpads next, naturally... After that, we'll have to wait and see what the response is... We'd love to hit XBOX & PS too, of course.
If Rampage was to be made into a film, how would you want it to be done? I heard it was supposed to be made into a film, offered my services to the producers, and even asked Stan Lee to play me if the producers wanted me in a cameo role. Never heard back.
I grew up not around actual arcade units (I'm 22, those are rare these days) but playing MAME. Rampage and Xenophobe are top 2 of my favorite games. Not here to ask, but to thank, for making such damn good games! My pleasure; literally.
EDIT: what's your hobbies? Hobbies: Outdoors - Camping, Hiking, Canoeing, Swimming Indoors - Reading, Painting Miniatures & Resin Figures.
